CN Studios Blog

I have this terrible habit of taking photos of everything except my friends and family. with the exception of special events, and even so, I get lazy. I’m working on a few personal projects this summer, one of which will be featuring my friends doing silly things (because really, why would I make friends with normal folks?).

I guess “My Lovelies” is the tentative title for the series. I have NO clue whatsoever what to call it. Oh, and this was my first time playing with high pass sharpening. I dig it.

This is Marissa, one of my best friends. I met her in a math class early on in high school, and from there on until graduation, we roamed the halls (and by roaming, I mean walking up to complete strangers and bugging the heck out of ‘em) and ruled the school.

This is David. Nobody in their right mind actually calls him that. We met in high school and went to the same college, where he had a part time job as a barista and fed me lots of smoothies. His specialty? Hugs.

This is Troy. I’ve also known him since high school (oh, did I mention this was the high school edition of the series?). He is one of the coolest Germafricans I know. Okay, okay, I admit it’s a pretty short list (population: 1).

Portrait taken a week before the wedding… I was just trying to get the wedding shots out before I got back to posting studio stuff. I have this habit of lobbing people’s heads off in photos (it seems to be my style to fill the frame with face/neck areas), so I had to graft some hair back from another photo. Not a bad job… luckily had a few shots where he was looking in the same direction. Yay for Photoshop.

Photo shoot with DJ V12 last week. I think it’s going to be in a magazine of some sort (should probably get some more info on that). I think there were some cooler shots (he brought his turntables!) but this was the one he wanted for now.

I think I’m getting the hang of using a gaussian blur mask occasionally (like for blurring myself out of sunglasses, or smoothing really bad skin). Also, I’ve noticed I have this bad habit of learning one lighting style and sticking to it for a few shoots at a time. I had a white-background kick a little while ago. Now I’m on this overhead-lighting mood.

Oh, and check out the new logo.

Another one of my basement shots with Karen, a writer who fell in love with the grungy feel of my tiny utility closet. Lighting kind of sucks, considering one person can barely fit in there, nevermind a 32” umbrella and a light stand. I should probably start using my Vivitar strobes for situations like these… or shoot with a semi-closed umbrella…. or drag my boom arm downstairs. Thinking about it, I think I might have been a little lazy here.

Oh, and I did the makeup for her too :)

I did a portrait session for DD last weekend… my favorite image is below. This is one of the few shoots where I powered the strobes down and shot at a wider aperture to soften the focus around everything except the face (note the blurry legs). Post work for the most part was cleaning up hair. >_<

I wish my teeth were that white.
